Little Donegall Street – Belfast
Located in Central Belfast Little Donegall Street finds itself on the periphery of both a bustling Cathedral Quarter and a neighbouring community surrounded with neglected and poorly developed buildings. This proposal attempted to counter this form of segregated urbanism that can be frequently found throughout much of the city.
By using the scale and materiality of the local context the building provides a natural progression from sparsely developed land to a much denser city centre. Internally retail units and car-parking are located on the ground floor whilst the upper levels have been divided into three main volumes housing 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments.
A central stair core connected via open deck walkways creates a visual relationship with the surrounding derelict townhouses and an internal communal courtyard encourages and a greater sense of community. This sense of community was also vital in the design of the shared rooftop terrace that offers panoramic views across the city.
